Melanin is a naturally occurring pigment found throughout the human body that helps to determine physical characteristics such as hair and skin color.
Melanin in the eyes, moreover, plays a much more essential role, protecting eyes against damage and aiding visual acuity. Melanin is located in the iris filters harmful light. It is also found in the eye’s inner lining reducing glare and increasing contrast. Melanin in the deeper layers protects sensitive retinal tissue.
